National Football Stadium Papua New Guinea

Hawkridge Entertainment Services led the team that successfully opened the National Football Stadium in Papua New Guinea on February 6th, 2016. The 15,000-seat Stadium includes 3,000 permanent seats located in a Western Grandstand and 11,500 lightweight seats located in the other areas. There are also plans to eventually expand the Stadium to have an ultimate capacity of 25,000 permanent seats. The venue also includes 500 corporate seats including a corporate deck and members seating area.

Hawkridge Entertainment Services were engaged to assist the client, Oilsearch with the venue readiness, the preparation of operational documentation and operation start-up of the Stadium. Throughout this process it was clear that the in-country team needed further assistance to successfully deliver the first event on February 6th and so Hawkridge Entertainment Services led the operational delivery of the event, a great game between the local PNG Hunters and the Australian NRL side the Penrith Panthers.

The Panthers eventually won the game but the crowd was excited by the new Stadium and felt immeasurable pride in now having an international class Stadium where they could watch a range of sporting activities in a safe and enjoyable environment.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon. Peter O’Neill opened the venue and took the opportunity to press for a NRL side to be based at the Stadium.

“This is one of the best stadiums for its size in the world. I’ve been around the world to several stadiums and the NFS beats them all”.

PNG Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko

Jamie Soward, a 212-game NRL veteran, described the venue as being better than what they had at Penrith, and the fans as something he would not forget. “Loved it. It was a fantastic experience for a lot of our younger guys who’ve never played in front of a crowd like that and it’s an experience I’ll never forget,” the 31-year-old playmaker said.

The coach of the Penrith side, Steve Georgallis added “The facilities are unbelievable. You should be very proud of the ground that you built.”
